| Since moving to the Colorado Springs area in 1992, I've been struck by the natural beauty surrounding me. I live next to the foothills with scrub oak, Ponderosa pine and mountains to the west, and prairie to the east. I'm a long-time sunrise and sunset watcher, and the skyscapes afforded by the junction of the mountain and prairie are breathtaking. Whether it's the power and excitement of storm clouds building, or the subtle beauty of mist floating in the canyons, I depend on nature for my spiritual survival.
And then there are the horses. There have always been horses inhabiting the landscapes of my imagination and of my sketchbooks. To me they are grace and strength, wildness and beauty. I can't drive past a meadow of horses without stopping to sketch, photograph or simply watch them. I find that the joy I get from the natural world disappears quickly in the routine of everyday life. That's why I "keep" the experiences in my art. And showing my work to others is a way of communication, a beacon sent out to kindred souls saying, "You've got to see what I saw today. Here look at what's out there... ." |
